IMPD: Police-action shooting occurs on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Officers are investigating a police-action shooting that happened on the south side of Indianapolis late Thursday morning.

According to officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, it happened in the 8000 block of Bluff Road. This is near West Stop 11 and Morgantown roads and the Glenns Valley Nature Park.

Two Johnson County deputies approached a white pick-up truck near the park. At some point an IMPD spokesman says the suspect made an aggressive movement toward the deputies.

That’s when the deputies fired shots.

IMPD officers rushed to the scene and used a tourniquet to try to stop the man from bleeding. Crews then rushed the man to the hospital in critical condition.

That man has been identified as 31-year-old Daryll Hedges.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, JCSO got involved after a female caller said that she had been getting text messages from Hedges saying that he was going to hurt himself after their break-up. She also said that he had access to numerous weapons.

Police are trying to determine if the suspect may have been trying to commit suicide by forcing the deputies to shoot him.

The deputies were placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure following a police involved shooting.
