Indiana farmers urged to check grain bins for spoilage

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Purdue experts say Indiana corn and soybean farmers should check their stored grains frequently because of heavy rains and humidity in the state.

Purdue University Extension specialist Klein Ileleji says spoilage can happens during the summer when conditions are wet. Experts say sunlight during the day heats the space inside grain bins and when temperatures drop at night condensation forms. That moisture can cause the spoilage.

Ilelji says farmers should check grain bins weekly. He also suggests running a ventilation fan.

The Purdue experts also caution farmers to work in teams when they inspect or check grain bins to avoid getting trapped.

Indiana’s record June rainfall brought floodwaters that soaked farm crops and damaged homes.
