Police: Alcohol a factor after teen dies in Muncie moped crash

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — A teen died after a moped crash early Friday morning in Muncie, according to police.

Police say 18-year-old Mason D. Wolfe was eastbound on Cornbread Roaad around 3:15 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Benjamin Brand, of New Castle, was also eastbound.

The moped reportedly became lodged in the front of the vehicle and was dragged 500 feet. Police say Cornbread Road is a small, dimly-lit road.

A passenger on the moped, Kore Konkle, was not seriously injured. Konkle began CPR on Wolfe before Wolfe was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Wolfe was pronounced dead around 12:30 p.m.

As of 8 p.m. Friday, Brand was on police hold and being checked out at a hospital. He has been preliminary charged with operating while intoxicated.

A warrant had been issued for Brand’s arrest in June after he failed to appear for a court hearing.

Additionally, he was convicted of driving while intoxicated in 2012.
