Indy animal clinics busy treating wildlife after storms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The severe storms have kept some animal clinics in Indianapolis pretty busy after receiving more than a dozen calls for wildlife injured from strong winds.

Veterinarians at the Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic treated anywhere between eight and nine baby birds, a raccoon, a possum, and a groundhog Tuesday morning.

The clinic is busy all year round, especially in the spring, summer, and after storms. The vets provided medical treatment for the wildlife at no charge.

After the animals are treated, they are taken over to rehabilitation where volunteers teach them skills before setting them free.

“Just remember that wildlife do not make good pets. There is more to raising them than just to giving them food,” said Dr. Angela Lennox, Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic. “We have to teach them survival skills and that’s where the wildlife rehabilitate that are licensed by the government come in.”

Dr. Lennox said if injuries are too severe and the animals don’t appear to have a chance to survive on its own in the wild, then they will be forced to be put to sleep.
