‘Iron Cowboy’ wrangles Indiana support on 50 state triathlon mission

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) – It is a physical feat not just anyone would jump into but jumping has been in fact the first step every morning for the past 40 days for a man known as the “Iron Cowboy.”

James Lawrence jumped into the Tuhey Pool in Muncie at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday as central Indiana played host to his world record in the making.

The endurance athlete launched his 40th full triathlon in as many days from Tuhey Pool in Muncie as part of a mission to complete 50 of the events in 50 consecutive days in 50 states.

Lawrence has been testing his body while challenging the country. His goal is to raise money and awareness to combat childhood obesity. The message comes with the mission to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles daily.

“I had to do something that had some (enormousness) to it in order to draw attention to such a big epidemic,” Lawrence said.

The Iron Cowboy has traveled across 40 states wrangling inspired crowds to join that day’s distance.

Stacey Gaven of Greenwood was one of dozens to drive to Muncie to see in-person what she has followed on social media.

“When you can see history in the making, I think that’s a really special thing and to have the opportunity to come out and support him and know his cause, is just great,” Gaven said.

Lawrence was scheduled to continue his journey to Wisconsin on Thursday.

The endeavor is documented on the Iron Cowboy Facebook page and website. A documentary film is expected to be produced for release in the winter followed by a book.
