Mayor’s Action Center busy with storm damage calls

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — When you call the Mayor’s Action Center in downtown Indianapolis, you’ll reach one of nine employees handling the high call volume after a week of bad storms.

The center is receiving about 1,000 calls a day.

“That’s much higher than we normally get this time of year on average,” MAC Communications Supervisor Stephanie Kelty said.

Kelty said for some issues, like power outages, they tell people to call other agencies.

“We’ve had quite a few calls about power and storm water issues, which we do direct back to IPL and Citizens Energy Group,” she said.

But the action center is the right place to call for forestry issues like debris.

“Trees that have fallen down across the roadways, trees that have fallen across alleys, easements, and sidewalks,” Kelty said.

They take the information and pass it along to the Department of Public Works.

“The MAC has been handling each call and then based on their location we do send crews out to each place,” DPW spokesperson Jennifer Hashem said.

Hashem said crews have been out every day picking up tree debris from yards.

“This storm was a lot bigger than we anticipated, but we’re doing the best we can to make sure we get this cleared as soon as possible,” she said.

She said clearing main streets is a priority, but that each address residents report to those MAC should be visited by a crew within two days.

The Mayor’s Action Center is open normal business hours this week despite those high call volumes and can be reached at 317-327-4622.

They said if you have debris you want to report, you can also report it on their website 24 hours a day.
