Thousands still without power on Indy’s west side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Utility crews are working around the clock to get the power back on more than 24 hours after strong storms hit central Indiana.

Wednesday morning, there were more than 7,000 people without power in Speedway and the west side of Indianapolis. Power companies say crews from other states are coming in to help.

Outside of Indianapolis, Duke Energy says crews will try to restore the biggest outages first, which  is in the Columbus area. They suggest if you still don’t have power, turn off as many appliances and electronics as possible. That helps cut down the demand on the power lines when power is restored.

If you’re one of the homes in Indianapolis without power and you need help right now, The Red Cross has set up a shelter in the city. There you can find snacks, meals, you can charge your phone and stay overnight if you need to.

The Red Cross also sent out volunteer teams in the Speedway area. They’re handing out clean up supplies and snacks and water. If you cannot get to the shelter or need some other help you can reach out to The Red Cross directly at 888-684-1441.

You can donate by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Your donation helps provide food, shelter and emotional support to those affected by disasters.
