West Indy struggles through third day of outage

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – After three straight days without power, people in a west Indianapolis neighborhood struggled through the outage as IPL crews worked around the clock.

Cindy Huffman spent the first half of her week living in the dark with her family in her home near North Girl School Road and Carlsen Avenue. Their food was on ice Wednesday, right next to the insulin for her 12-year-old grandson’s diabetes.

“You can’t sleep. You can’t do anything. It’s a mess,” Huffman said.

Huffman said they’ll have to grill what’s left of the food before it goes bad, and pray that IPL fixes the problem quickly.

“I don’t know how to explain it to be honest with you. I wanna cry. I honestly wanna cry because their ain’t nothing we can do,” she said.

Down the street, crews cleared the debris from low hanging lines. They worked just behind Sheryl Brown’s house, where the television was on and the fridge was running because of a generator her nephew dropped off Tuesday night.

“I just threw my arms around him and cried. It was like God knew that I was at the end of my rope,” Brown said.

Some people in the neighborhood had their power restored Wednesday afternoon. An IPL spokesperson said power could be fully restored in the area by 7 p.m. Wednesday.

At least until then, Brown knew she’d still be on the generator.

And Huffman knew she’d be stuck in a humid house.

“We tried everything. Just sit still basically by the back door is what I’m doing,” Huffman said.

IPL officials said full repairs for the Indianapolis area might not be complete until the end of the week.
