West Lafayette house catches fire, possibly from lightning strike

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Firefighters responded to the scene of a house fire in West Lafayette.

The Wabash Township Fire Department responded to the fire on Crusade Drive late Friday afternoon. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but neighbors tell WISH-TV’s sister station WLFI that they saw lightning strike moments before the fire began and called it in to police.

Wabash Township Fire Public Information Officer Kevin McCombs said when crews arrived there was heavy smoke around the home and showing signs of fire in the attic. Multiple agencies has to be called in to assist as the fire worsened.

“We awaited other crews to arrive. And by that time, the fire was coming through the roof and vent holes through the backside,” McCombs said. “And from there it spread to the attic space, so it was kind of hard to contain off the get-go.”

The fire was contained just before 6 p.m.

The homeowners are actually on vacation, so no on was inside the home at the time of the blaze. No pets were inside either.
