Drivers taking illegal ‘shortcut’ are getting stuck

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Some drivers trying to take a shortcut on Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette are getting stuck in the sand.

Two cars have been towed after drivers tried to go through the sandy median between McDonald’s and Right Guy’s Auto.

Lafayette construction manager Randy Loft said he often sees people breaking the rules to cut across this area. He said not only is it against the law, but it can cost drivers a lot of money.

“You will damage your vehicle, there’s sand! And if you get stuck in it, you’ll have to be towed out and that’s another expense,” said Loft. “So, we recommend not to do it.”

Loft said people are moving cones and barricades to cross over. He said if you are caught moving construction materials, you will receive a hefty fine.

If motorists want to get to the other side, Loft said they need to use the U-turn opportunity at the end of the construction zone.
