FWPD: Man beaten after attacking woman

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police say a man who tried to attack a woman in an apartment complex parking lot ended up being beaten by three other individuals instead.

According to police, officers were initially dispatched to the 1400 block of Greene Street at the Villages of Hanna Townhouses around 1:30 a.m. Monday for a reported rape.

When police arrived they found an unconscious man in the parking lot suffering from severe head injuries. The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but was later downgraded to critical condition.

FWPD Spokesman Officer John Chambers said the woman screamed for help when the man jumped out and grabbed her. Chambers said the people who helped get the attacker away left the area before police arrived. Chambers said police would like to talk to any witnesses, including those who helped.

It’s unclear if the woman knew her attacker.

Police said the suspect was banned previously from the property and has a previous trespassing conviction for being on the property. It’s unknown if the suspect has any previous incidents involving battery or sexual assault.

Chambers said the woman was not injured and no rape took place.
