INDOT to close 169th Street in Westfield

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – Drivers in Westfield may run into more construction on their way to work Monday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is blocking off 169th Street at US 31 this week to rebuild the road under the overpass.

169th Street will be closed for about two weeks. This is part of a larger project rebuilding US 31 from Interstate 465 all the way to State Road 38. INDOT said the entire project is on track to be finished by the end of the year, despite this summer’s rain and storms.

During the closure at 169th Street, drivers can use State Road 32 to get to Union Street or Oakridge Road.

INDOT said most of the major Westfield restrictions are open again, but some of the heaviest construction is still going on at 191st Street. Crews there are working on a new intersection and northbound lanes. That construction will last at least until August, possibly September. Once that interchange opens, INDOT said crews will start work at the 196th Street interchange.

There is still lots of work happening in Carmel. Later this week, drivers may notice some changes there too. Currently, crews are restricting some lanes near 126th Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. INDOT hopes to open those lanes by end of day Tuesday.

INDOT is warning drivers to be aware of all the construction happening this summer, especially as some interchanges shut down and lanes shift. Friday of last week a truck driver was hit by a car while delivering beams to a construction site at 116th Street and US 31. INDOT is once again urging drivers be alert and obey the construction zone speed limits.

“It is never an easy task to balance the interests of residents, businesses, motorists and workers in order to safely and expeditiously build improvements in an area that is already congested. It is imperative for everyone’s safety that drivers avoid distractions and abide by speed limits when driving through work zones, especially with the amount of construction activity and shifting traffic patterns on this corridor,” said INDOT spokesperson Nathan Riggs.
