Indiana jobless mark below 5 percent for 1st time since 2008

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana’s unemployment rate has dropped below 5 percent for the first time since the national recession was starting in 2008.

Figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Workforce Development show Indiana’s jobless mark fell to 4.9 percent for June. That is down two-tenths of a percentage point from May’s rate.

The last time Indiana had an unemployment rate below 5 percent was in February 2008. Indiana’s unemployment level peaked from the recession at 10.9 percent in early 2010.

Indiana is slightly below the national jobless rate of 5.3 percent.

Federal figures show about 158,000 people were looking for jobs in Indiana last month.
