Victim assistance program provides support to the suffering

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A brother and sister are recovering in the hospital after a vicious attack and several children that witnessed the crime are coping with what they saw.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, 56-year-old Michael Love, shot 32-year-old Sultanna Reed, and her 25-year-old brother Zachariah Guyton.

Police say Love put on a dress and a wig and ambushed Reed and Guyton as they were loading children in a vehicle.

Those children were primary witnesses to the attack. In the aftermath, the children were left with blood stained clothes, and images that will not quickly fade away.

IMPD offers help to those victims and children through its victim assistance program. The 24-hour-on-call crisis intervention unit provides critical services to those in need.

The crisis counselors respond to a variety of crimes including homicide, robbery and sexual assaults.

Victims and families of victims, are all eligible to receive services. The support staff is trained in emotional support, on-scene crisis intervention and the group can make referrals to support groups including housing, medical and mental services.
