INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are trying to track down the man they believe shot another man in the head.
It happened Wednesday morning around 11:30 at the Willow Brook Apartments off of 48th Street and Allisonville Road.
Abria Smith was just waking up, when she heard a loud and unmistakable blast.
“I was laying in my bed and we heard a gun shot. My cousin, she said somebody got shot. But we didn’t move. So by the time we made it down here at 11:32, it was laying out there shot,” said Smith.
Police arrived on the scene moments later and found a man with a gunshot wound to the head.
“It was crazy to see a dead body just laying there and by the time we did come down here it was people, like pick at him looking at him and stuff, to make sure he was alright,” said Smith.
Smith assumed the man was dead, but police say he was rushed to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition. IMPD homicide detectives were also on the scene, according to police, “out of an abundance of caution, should the victim not survive.”
Authorities spent the morning and afternoon collecting evidence in the parking lot, and talking to witnesses to try and determine what happened and why. Early in the investigation, they started the manhunt for two suspects.
“That’s the weird part. We didn’t hear nothing. We didn’t hear no car or doors slam, or we didn’t hear the car driving. We didn’t hear none of that. It was just him,” said Smith.
“Everyone’s kids running around. That could’ve been anyone’s kids. Somebody shot somebody and sped off. They could’ve easily hit one of these kids out here,” said Kenneth Baldwin, who is staying with a friend at Willow Brook.
Kahla Green rushed home to from work, after news broke.
“I was just making sure it wasn’t my child because there are a lot of kids over here. They’re always outside playing. I was just making sure him and his little friends were ok,” said Green.
The shooting now has neighbors questioning their own safety.
“I go to work and home, stay in the house or I be gone,” said Smith.
“It makes you very nervous. It makes me want to keep my kid inside,” said Green.
Detectives do not believe this was a random act.
