INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sherwood Hills Baptist Church is located near one of the hot spots for the “Operation Smoke Show” arrest raids.
Pastor Robert Pelkey said he is thrilled to hear about the arrests and removal of guns from the streets.
He said this area has a history of violence.
In six years, he has had his own car broken into three times.
His church had been broken into and burglarized.
He even locks the doors of the church during services.
He is glad these arrests were made for the safety of his congregation.
“To know that that’s being cracked down on the crime in the area, that’s a real relief. Now they can rest a little easier,” Pelkey said
Karen Duvall was happy to hear she might not have to fear attacks at her church anymore.
“If they arrested 35 members, that is a lot and hopefully that’ll stop that,” she said.
Down the street from the church, Noelia Gonzalez is enjoying time with her kids before they head back to school.
“We really like to go out with them and take a walk sometimes in the evening,” she said.
She wasn’t even aware before the arrests that gangs were operating in her neighborhood, but said she is glad to know the police are cracking down on the crime.
“I think hopefully if they got all these people arrested we can probably feel safe again,” she said.
