Fans race to Pittsboro to support Jeff Gordon

PITTSBORO, Ind. (WISH) — Jeff Gordon fans raced to Pittsboro Thursday to celebrate their favorite racer. They cheered Gordon on as a parade rolled through his old town.

The event featured live music and fun and games for kids. There was no number 24 on the remote control racecar track, but that was okay for Owen and Colby Bell. The toddlers will see Jeff Gordon race in person this weekend for the first time.

“I like to see him race,” Owen said.

Thursday, they came from Danville to watch Gordon stroll by at a slower place.

Some fans had to burn some rubber to get there. Dan Schuh drove about 140 miles from Warsaw. To him, Gordon is more than just a NASCAR driver.

“His values, his family, his commitment,” Schuh said. “He does so much for kids.”

So he set up on the side of the road to snap a photo of the driver.

“Last time around, maybe. So just had to be a part of it,” he said.

Fans looked back on a driver they’ve loved watching. But many of them agreed: he still has another IMS race to win.

“Last ride at home? He’s gonna win,” local racing fan Harold Emerson said.

The parade was held in Pittsboro because Gordon lived there for part of his youth. After the parade, Gordon was honored onstage by local community leaders and Gov. Mike Pence.
