NFL team hires first-ever female coach

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Arizona Cardinals have made NFL history. They hired the first-ever female NFL coach.

The Arizona Cardinals announced Monday, Jen Welter will be a training camp and preseason intern coaching inside linebackers.

Welter has a history of playing and coaching professional football.

According to NFL.com, she played 14 years of professional football in the Women’s Football Alliance.

Last year, she played running back and special teams in the Indoor Football League, becoming the first woman to hold a non-kicking position in a men’s pro sports league.

She also coached that team.

During the owners meeting in March, someone asked The Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, if there was a possibility of female coaches in the NFL.

“The minute they can prove they can make a player better, they’ll be hired,” Arians said.

During the announcement of Welter joining the team, Arians said, “Coaching is nothing more than teaching. One thing I have learned from players is, ‘How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, man, I’ll listen.’ I really believe she’ll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her.”

The Arizona Cardinals will hold a press conference Tuesday at 4 p.m. to introduce Welter.
