VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — A northwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in the death of his fiancee’s 2-year-old son.

The (Munster) Times reports 28-year-old Felix Duron of Portage Township was sentenced Monday on a felony count of neglect of a dependent. Online court records say he pleaded guilty in Porter County court in June to a charge in the boy’s death.

Authorities say Duron at first told police he found Bentley Mihal face down by a trampoline at their home, and later said the boy tripped down a step and hit his head on the floor and a shelf. Police say Duron eventually admitted to shaking the boy after waking up to him crying one morning in July 2014.

According to police, the boy later died from his injuries. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
