Recent Study Reveals Black Students Are Still Disciplined At Alarming Rates across the Nation
Since many kids are now back in school, there’s no better time than now to have a candid discussion about how to make our child’s education even better. A new study by the Civil Rights Project at UCLA, highlights an ever-widening discipline gap, which shows that African-American students are suspended at alarmingly higher rates compared to White students.
Renae Azziz, education Specialist and nationally certified school psychologist, stopped by our Indy Style studios to discuss the topic and says there are several things ALL parents and educators need to do to ensure that student’s behavior doesn’t result in suspension, robbing them of valuable instructional time.Parents should:
1. Know The School’s Discipline Code: Make sure you are familiar with the school’s expectations on behavior and reinforce those expectations at home.
2. Meet With Teachers and Administrators: Clearly define behavior expectations and how you will consistently communicate with one another.
3. Focus on Positively Reinforcing Behavior: Develop a plan to acknowledge your student for the engaging in the behavior you want to see. 1. Build relationships with students: Establish meaningful relationships with students in order to influence positive behavior at school.
2. Address discipline proactively: Educators must explicitly teach and reinforce the behavior you want to see as opposed to what you don’t want to see.
3. Develop cultural proficiency: Educators must ensure they are proficient in understanding cultural differences in behavior in order to avoid misinterpretations of behavior.Educators should:
