Indiana Ave. shooting suspect in court, IMPD seeks 2nd suspect

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A suspect accused in a shootout with police after a large party near IUPUI’s campus appeared court Friday morning. This comes as IMPD asks for the community’s help identifying another suspect in the case.

Tyrice Howard-Smith appeared in court Friday. He was arrested in connection to a shootout with police at the Tyler Apartments after a party got out of control last weekend. Police said a fight broke out over stolen cell phones, and a group people went into the hallway and started shooting.

When officers got there, they say three men shot at them in a stairwell and then ran away. Officers said they shot back at the men. Soon after, three men showed up at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital with gunshot wounds.

Court documents show Howard-Smith was one of those men. According to court documents, he admitted shooting in the stairwell where the officers were, but he said he was just holding his gun too tight and it accidentally went off. He now faces a criminal recklessness charge.

In court on Friday, prosecutors sought to get Howard-Smith’s bail revoked. The judge took that under advisement, and a hearing on the matter was scheduled for Tuesday. A jury trial was tentatively scheduled for Oct. 19, and no contact orders were issued in the case.

Meanwhile, police are looking for another man in connection to this incident. IMPD is asking for the community’s help in finding the man in a red shirt. They say he was caught on camera shooting into a crowded hallway before police got there. IMPD said he ran away right before officers arrived.

Court documents show another person involved told officers a “guy in a red shirt” pulled a gun, and then people started shooting in the hallway. The documents go on to say a “guy in a red shirt” was shooting with his eyes closed – not shooting to kill, but shooting to scare.

If you know anything about the man in the red shirt, your asked to call Crimestoppers at 262-TIPS.

24-Hour News 8 asked IMPD if officers will be increasing patrols, or doing anything differently this weekend after such a violent night. Officers tell me they will be monitoring activity in the area, and will respond appropriately.
