HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A pursuit in Howard County ended with two people dead and one person in custody.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Department arrested Deryn M. Johnson, of Peru, on preliminary charges of resisting arrest, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and leaving the scene of an accident.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the pursuit ended near 350 East and 300 South near the unincorporated town of Center in Howard County Monday evening. HCSO said that deputies attempted to pull over a truck, but the truck took off, leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit that lasted about five minutes. Authorities said the truck reached speeds of 100 miles per hour.
Investigators say the truck struck a house, then continued the chase.
The truck then ran a stop sign and struck a vehicle with two women inside. Both of the women in that vehicle died as a result of the crash. The Howard County Sheriff’s Department said the two women, 73-year-old Nancy Cripe and 82-year old Mary Jo Dimmitt, were sisters.
The passenger in the truck was treated for minor injuries and released. The Sheriff’s Department said the case is still under investigation and he could eventually face charges.
Deryn Johnson is being held in the Howard County Jail without bond.
