Retired teachers talks about shortage of school teachers
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – Numbers from the Indiana Department of Education show there’s a decreasing trend in the number of new teachers.
These are the numbers of people who have received teaching licenses:
- 2009-2010: 5,599
- 2010-2011: 5,902
- 2011-2012: 5,458
- 2012-2013: 4,613
- 2013-2014: 4,565
Retired teacher Lynnette Husted taught in four states for a total of 40 years. She said, “I know it’s a cliché remark, but when you see that child get it it’s very rewarding. That’s why people teach..”
Husted believes the lack of teachers in the state is due to three reasons: pay, a lack of support and a lack of respect.
“Teachers really don’t have the respect of the governor, the legislative body and so on,” said Husted.
Husted said she’s also heard some colleges and universities are eliminating certain degrees students can get in education.
The retired teacher feels there needs to be some sort of a campaign to get teachers better pay, support and respect.
