2nd council votes to join commission for proposed reservoir

CHESTERFIELD, Ind. (AP) – Chesterfield in central Indiana is joining a commission that would guide a proposal for a 2,100-acre reservoir on the White River.

The Herald Bulletin reports the Chesterfield Town Council voted 3-2 Monday to join a commission that would oversee a feasibility study for the $440 million Mounds Lake proposal. The reservoir would be created by damming the White River in Anderson, forming a lake stretching for seven miles.

The Anderson City Council has also voted to join the commission, and votes are scheduled later this month in Daleville and Yorktown. Votes opposing the project have come from the Muncie City Council, Delaware County Council and Delaware County commissioners.

Supporters of the project say it could help long-term water needs and bring investment, while opponents say it isn’t needed and would threaten historic sites.
