Delta HS assault report shocks parents

DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Parents are sounding off as Indiana State Police look into a reported assault within the Delta High School football team.

A parent who asked to remain anonymous said the incident involved upperclassmen targeting younger players.

State police said they received the report from school officials earlier this summer, and now their investigation is nearing complete. An investigator said if any students are charged they will likely face misdemeanors.

Local parent Nathan Vest said he’s shocked by the allegations.

“You see stuff like that on TV and then when it happens like this, it kind of hits you pretty hard,” Vest said.

Vest, a Delta High School graduate, said he’s never heard of similar incidents happening within the district.

His kids are now in elementary school, but he said it’s a concern to hear of an assault report at any level in the district.

“I got concerns about everything with my kids,” Vest said. “We protect them pretty closely as best as we can.”

Another local parent who asked to remain anonymous said he was surprised and concerned by the report.

Delaware County Community Schools Superintendent Reece Mann did not comment on whether any students have been or will be suspended or expelled. He said the district is cooperating with police.

“The thought of not sharing or covering it up, that’s not an option,” Mann said. “That’s not even any consideration whatsoever.”

Police plan on turning their findings into the Delaware County Prosecutor’s office late next week.
