Andre Green’s first run-in with IMPD came as a toddler

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Andre Green’s troubles started well before Sunday night.

On March 22, 2004, police were called to Green’s preschool after the toddler unknowingly brought crack cocaine to school.

The child thought it was just flour. At the time, police estimated the value of the drugs at about $10,000.

“This was a substantial amount of cocaine,” said then Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sgt. Roger Tuchek. “In my 18-year career this is the second largest amount of cocaine I’ve seen come off one person.”

The reports on Green continued to stack up. In some cases, he was the victim. Like the time he called 911 twice because he was suicidal. Green told an officer that he swallowed 13 ADHD pills. In another case, he told officers he overdosed on Advil.

Then there were reports where police labeled him as the aggressor. During a classroom dispute, he threatened a teacher.

“I can beat you up,” said Green in an IMPD report.

The last report police would file on Green would happen on Sunday night. Investigators were pursuing Green in a chase after he carjacked a man at gun point. Officers cornered Green on the 3300 of Butler Avenue.

Investigators say instead of surrendering, Green rammed the stolen car into squad cars. Officers fired several shots that proved to be fatal.

“We were wondering what we could have done collectively to save this young life,” said Chief Rick Hite.

IMPD is still investigating this case. The department hopes to turn it over to the prosecutor’s office in the next couple of days.
