Service held for Gary girl, 15, killed in drive-by shooting

GARY, Ind. (AP) – A service for a 15-year-old Gary girl fatally shot during a drive-by shooting has drawn an overflow crowd to pay respects.

The (Munster) Times reports the service for Daja Brookshire was held Wednesday at Van Buren Missionary Baptist Church. Gary police say she was shot in the back Aug. 2 while getting out of a car outside the home of a friend’s grandmother.

Attendees at the service included Brookshire’s family and her teammates from the girls track team at West Side Leadership Academy. Her grandfather, the Rev. Chet J. Johnson Sr., spoke about how the community needs to help the city and police, and stop protecting people involved in violent crimes.

A letter read on behalf of the Gary school district said Brookshire was a “shining star,” and would be “sorely missed.”
