WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – Emergency crews were on the scene of a serious crash in White County Friday evening that killed Martha Leitzow, 57, of Monon.

White County authorities responded to the intersection of U.S. 24 and County Road 300 East for a two-vehicle crash around 4 p.m. The crash happened at the location of a flashing light between the city of Monticello and the town of Reynolds.

Witnesses tell News 18 a small SUV driven by Leitzow was heading south on CR 300 East and attempting to turn left onto U.S. 24, while the pickup truck was going west on U.S. 24 when the vehicles collided.

The White County Sheriff’s Office said Leitzow had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead. Deputies said a male passenger in that vehicle also suffered injuries, went to the hospital and was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. His name is not being released at this time. The male driver of the pickup truck declined treatment on the scene.

Traffic along U.S. 231 was down to one lane for about 4 hours. Police alternated traffic entering and leaving Monticello. However, police were not allowing motorists to access CR 300 East from U.S. 24.
