11-month-old killed in Indiana Amish buggy crash

TOPEKA, Ind. (WANE) – An 11-month-old girl was killed and a 2-year-old boy was critically injured when a car rear-ended an Amish buggy Thursday night.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, Caleb Wingard of Topeka was traveling south on County Road 600 West near County Road 400 South around 10:30 p.m. when he rear-ended a buggy.

Investigators said an 11-month-old girl was thrown from the buggy. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A two-year-old boy and three-year-old girl were taken by air ambulance to a Fort Wayne hospital. The boy was listed in critical condition. The sheriff’s department did not have a condition for the girl.

Police said Wingard was arrested on a preliminary charge of minor in possession (of alcohol). He was also ticked for a learners permit violation, speed too fast to avoid a collision and following to closely. Wingard’s age was not listed on the crash report.

Police have not released the identities of the children.
