Roads in Kokomo are on a diet

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) — Roads in Kokomo are about to get skinnier, according to Mayor Greg Goodnight.

Sixty-six roads will be repaired or resurfaced. A dozen will be re-sized from 12 feet wide down to 10 feet.

On the to-do list includes Webster Street, Union Street and Berkley Road.

Ten roadways located in the Indian Heights neighborhood will be resurfaced. Crews already started working on this project, slated to be complete by the end of the year.

“There are three reasons why we decided to downsize and fix roads throughout Kokomo. It’s good for the environment, it will improve safety and reduce tax payer’s cost,” said Mayor Greg Goodnight.

City councilman Bob Hayes believes reducing the size of lanes will force drivers to pay closer attention when they are behind the wheel.

He says it’s also cheaper to make lanes smaller verses fixing the ones damaged by mother nature.

“We are thinking outside of the box and by doing so, this will probably save tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said Hayes.
