10 worst areas for pedestrians in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – On average, a person in Indianapolis was struck by a vehicle and died every 22 days from 2010 until 2014.

According to police reports, at least 82 people died in more than 1,100 pedestrian crashes in the five-year period between 2010 and 2014.

Health by Design, a non-profit in the circle city, plans to visit the 10 areas in the city that researchers said are the most dangerous for pedestrians.

They then plan to bring in a team of professionals, community partners and volunteers that will conduct walk assessments in those areas.

“The final report will lead to tangible actions that can be taken to keep people traveling on foot safer in high crash areas,” said Kim Irwin, coordinator of Health by Design, who is heading up the project. “We expect there will be some quick, easy and lower cost interventions possible, such as repainting crosswalks and re-timing pedestrian signals, but we also know that some action items will be long-term and require additional public investment.”

The 10 areas they will be assessing are:

  • West 86th Street between Michigan Road and Harcourt Road
  • West 34th Street and 38th Street
  • West 38th Street between Boulevard Place and Meridian Street
  • East 38th Street from the Indiana State Fairgrounds to Sherman Avenue
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street from 25th Street to 30th Street
  • Meridian Street and Illinois Street from 14th Street to 34th Street
  • West 10th Street from Tibbs Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street
  • East 10th Street from Woodruff Place to Arlington Avenue
  • West Washington Street from 465 to Holt Road
  • East Washington Street from Willard Park to Arlington Avenue
