Man charged in crash that led to baby’s rescue from creek

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – A Muncie man has been charged with stealing a car that police say he crashed into a creek with two children inside.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports 27-year-old Brent South is charged with driving with a controlled substance in his system, residential entry and auto theft. Authorities say he stole a parked car in Muncie last month, drove it off the road and flipped it into a creek.

Police say an 11-month-old girl inside the car was saved by a bystander, who also helped a 13-year-old girl inside to safety. Witnesses told police that South left the scene on foot, and police say he was later arrested in the neighborhood.

An initial hearing for South is scheduled next month. Online court records did not list an attorney for him.
