Pistol-whipped police officer hesitated because he ‘didn’t want to be in the media’

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The case of a Birmingham police detective who was pistol-whipped with his own weapon and knocked unconscious is getting national attention.

According to CNN, national exposure is part of the reason the officer hesitated to use force against the suspect.

Janard Cunningham, 34, is charged with attempted murder for allegedly assaulting the BPD officer during a traffic stop on Aug. 7.

Investigators said the suspect admitted to beating the officer because of his own mistrust of police.

CNN reports the unnamed officer told them quote: “A lot of officers are being too cautious because of what’s going on in the media…I hesitated because I didn’t want to be in the media like I am right now.”

Cunningham’s next court date is set for Sept. 1.
