Mishawaka to consider ban on skateboarding

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) – City leaders in Mishawaka are considering a ban on skateboarders at six city parks.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the city parks board plans a Tuesday hearing to get public input about the proposed ban. Parks Superintendent Terry Zeller proposed the ban, including skateboards, longboards and inline skates, saying the board is “trying to be proactive and not reactive.” The ban wouldn’t include Mishawaka’s Riverwalk.

At issue are near miss collisions with pedestrians and bicyclists and grinding damage of skateboard wheels on public property.

In response, skateboarders have said the city should build a skateboard park. That’s been on Mishawaka parks’ five-year plan for years.
