GARY, Ind. (AP) — Gary has gone a week without a homicide, following a stretch of two months during which the city saw 14 people killed.

The (Munster) Times reports the last homicides took place late Aug. 10 and early Aug. 11, when two men were killed and another was hurt in two separate shootings. A man was wounded by gunfire Sunday.

The city has had 38 homicides so far this year, up from 22 at the same point a year ago. There were a total of 46 homicides in Gary last year and 55 in 2013.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich says his department has increased patrols in Gary since getting $200,000 from the county council last week to pay officers overtime. Buncich says his department is also getting more anonymous tips. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
