Mom accused of killing son wants confession thrown out

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A South Bend woman accused of killing her 11-month-old son and smothering her daughter wants a judge to throw out her confession to police.

The South Bend Tribune reports 22-year-old Nyesha Crockett made the request Tuesday, claiming she was coerced by police. She has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in her son’s August 2014 death and her then-14-month-old daughter’s February 2014 injury that left her in a coma.

Defense attorney Charles Lahey wrote in a motion that police repeatedly demanded Crockett admit to harming her children. Lahey said an interrogator told Crockett confessing would save her child’s life.

A St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office spokeswoman told the newspaper that prosecutors couldn’t comment on a pending motion.

Prosecutors say Crocket smothered her son, threw him on the ground and kicked him. He died at a hospital.
