COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — A Columbus man was arrested Saturday morning and is accused of threatening to kill family members with a machete.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 1200 block of Pearl Street around 8:30 a.m. According to police, a woman called 911 saying her 20-year-old son, Devon N. Vandiver, was destroying the home with the weapon.

The woman said she and her other son barricaded themselves in the back of the apartment after they couldn’t escape out the front door.

When police arrived, they say they could hear screaming and the sounds of a physical altercation inside the apartment. Officers kicked open the locked front door but say Vandiver slammed the door on them.

Officers deployed a stun gun through the front door’s broken window and took Vandiver into custody.

Police say a large machete was found on a couch, near where Vandiver had been standing. He was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, illegal consumption, intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal confinement with a deadly weapon.
