INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A fire just east of downtown Indianapolis forced three families from their homes and injured two firefighters early Wednesday morning.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was called to a duplex in the 900 block of North Oakland Avenue, near 10th and North Rural streets, around 2:30 a.m.

Officials say the fire started in the south unit and that neither side of the house had working smoke detectors.

Seven people made it out OK. Four lived on one side, three on the other. Officials say two pet cats were missing after the fire.

Two firefighters were transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital after suffering from heat exhaustion. Their injuries were said to be slight.

It’s unclear what may have started the fire.
