Experts weigh in on cost of living by zip code

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Economic Policy Institute, a non-partisan think tank in Washington, D.C., released a family budget calculator that helps determine the cost of living by zip code in America.

Not surprisingly, the most expensive places to raise a family are on the east coast. A six figure income does not seem to stretch very far in some places around the country, and in some places the family income needs to be between $50,000 to $100,000 a year to raise a family of four.

The study looked at 618 metropolitan areas, and studied the following areas to determine the cost of living: housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, taxes and other necessities.

Washington, D.C., is the most expensive place to raise a family with different zip codes in New York City hold firm the the second, third and fourth spots.
