LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) – For a teen from Long Island, walking into class for the first day of his senior year will be extra special. That’s because it was just a few months ago that doctors told him he may never walk again.
Nico Fiorello was paralyzed in a swimming accident back in May as he dove into the water at the beach, and ended up breaking bones in his neck and suffering spinal cord damage when he hit a sandbar.
Nico says he was unable to move anything, and doctors said that based on his injuries, he only had a 10 percent chance of moving on his own again, and the chances of him walking normally were slim to none.
However, Nico has defied those odds with the help of two surgeries and some intense rehab. He’s now taking steps on his own, just four months later.
On Thursday he’s going back to school, which also happens to be his mother’s birthday.
