Indiana city where James Dean was born to dedicate monument

MARION, Ind. (AP) – The north-central Indiana city of Marion is preparing to dedicate a monument marking James Dean’s birthplace.

The monument will be dedicated Sept. 30 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Dean’s death. The actor died Sept. 30, 1955, in a California car crash at age 24 after appearing in only three movies: “Giant,” ”East of Eden” and “Rebel Without a Cause.”

Actor Maxwell Caulfield will be one of several guest speakers at the commemoration.

The focal point of the memorial will be a six-foot-tall black granite monument with pictures of Dean etched into the front along with a picture of the actor’s birthplace, The Seven Gables Apartment House, which once stood at the site.

The back will feature a brief bio of the film star.
