Man convicted for murdering woman in basement is sentenced

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The man convicted for killing a woman in the basement of a far east side home was sentenced on Friday morning.

According to court records, 52-year-old Morice Ervin was sentenced to 95 years for the murder of 21-year-old Shannon Kleeman. He was also sentenced to an additional 40 years for rape. Ervin was found guilty of the crime on Aug. 27.

According to police,Kleeman was found dead in the basement of her step-mother’s home in the 600 block of Linwood Avenue in March 2014. Police arrested Ervin in June 2014 on murder and rape charges.

A judge found Ervin guilty on both counts.

Police say that Ervin lived in a neighboring home when the murder took place.

The Marion County Coroner’s office says official cause of death was a shotgun wound to the head. Police say DNA aided in solving the case.
