LAKE STATION, Ind. (AP) — Democratic precinct committee members will meet later this month to elect the replacement for a northwestern Indiana mayor convicted of fraud and other charges for improperly using food pantry and campaign funds.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich, who heads the county party, has scheduled a Sept. 28 caucus to replace Keith Soderquist. Buncich told the (Merrillville) Post-Tribune he wants someone in place as soon as possible.
Buncich said that the head of the Lake Station City Council, John McDaniel, will act as mayor until then.
One potential replacement is former Lake Station Judge Christopher Anderson, who defeated Soderquist for the Democratic nomination for mayor in May. But Anderson told The (Munster) Times he doesn’t expect that to happen, saying he won’t dump his law clients on short notice.
