Work starts on Purdue tech center at old Anderson plant site

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – The mayor of Anderson says a new Purdue University technology education center in the city will redevelop an abandoned industrial site and promote the latest advanced manufacturing technology.

Mayor Kevin Smith and Purdue officials took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the Purdue Polytechnic Institute. The $15 million project due to be completed next fall is being financed with city bonds.

The Herald Bulletin reports the center is expected within five years to have up to 400 students in programs such as supply chain management and computer technology.

The 94,000-square-foot facility is being built on a nearly 12-acre site where a General Motors plant formerly stood. Purdue Polytechnic will lease 44,000 square feet and the remaining 50,000 square feet will be available for startup companies.
