NORTH VERNON, Ind. (WISH) — Police in North Vernon are searching for the mother of a 12-hour-old baby abandoned near a church.

The baby was reportedly found at Christ’s Way Church around 5 p.m. by the pastor’s wife. She said she heard cries from behind a dumpster and discovered the baby.

Police say he weighs about 8 pounds, was born full term and was mildly dehydrated when found.

He is described as Caucasian and was found clean and wrapped in coats with the umbilical cord still attached. Police say he is in normal health.

Police are asking that the mother be located due to likely medical conditions following the delivery of the baby.

“We’re totally relying on follow up investigation or someone who might be familiar with the mother that maybe has talked with or seen someone who was close full term since this morning,” said Sgt. Andrew Richmomd with the North Vernon Police Department. “If anyone has information on a female that matches that description we’re just trying to do a welfare check on her.”

The Department of Child Services has taken over the case.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call North Vernon police at 812-346-1466 or central dispatch at 812-346-2345.
