CLEVELAND, Ohio (CNN) — An Ohio soldier is back with the dog that used to serve at his side.
Army Specialist John Nyerghes and his former partner Ranger were reunited earlier this week at the Cleveland airport. The two served together in Afghanistan.
Ranger is trained to locate IEDs and it’s estimated that the dog’s work saved upwards of 1,000 American lives.
When John’s deployment ended in 2012, the two were separated.
“It was pretty tough,” he said. “I kept hearing he was getting moved here, he was getting moved there. And I always just felt like I was one step behind.”
Two rescue groups stepped in and now, almost three years later, the pair is back together. They’ll live in Cleveland.
