House to vote on temporary resolution to avoid shutdown

WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) – Parks closing their doors, soldiers going without a paycheck and government agencies unable to offer services to the American public are each a possible repercussion of what happens on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

The House of Representatives plans to vote on what’s called a continuing resolution, which the Senate already passed and temporarily funds the U.S. government until Dec. 11.  If they do not pass anything before midnight Wednesday, the government will run out of funding Oct. 1.

House Republicans plan to vote on whether to change the resolution the Senate passed by including a section that defunds Planned Parenthood.

“All funds that are no longer available to Planned Parenthood … and its affiliates and clinics … will continue to be made available to other eligible entities to provide women’s health care services,” according to the proposed new section.

Speaker of the House John Boehner and several fellow Republicans have said they do not expect the government to shut down, but admit it may set them up for another budget battle in three months.
