VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – The community is mourning the death of a beloved man, this after a tragic accident took the life of an educator.

The accident happened just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the southbound lanes of State Road 63 near the Vigo/Vermillion county line. That is at Trinity Ave. (111th Ave.) on State Road 63.

According to Vigo County Sheriff Gregg Ewing, Joe Minnis was killed in the crash. Officials say Minnis was driving northbound on 63 and hydroplaned, causing him to cross the median and hit a semi traveling in the southbound lanes.

“It’s such a tremendous tragedy for the entire community on many fronts,” said Superintendent Danny Tanoos.

Minnis served on the school board for three years, and was named president of the board in 2009. “He wasn’t one who did it for the attention or any type of glory, other than the glory of helping a child,” said Tanoos.

Several people who knew Minnis praised his commitment to community service and passion for helping youth in the area. Minnis was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Terre Haute and a long-time board member of the Vigo County Education Foundation.

“I think it goes to the point that we hear so often that we have to cherish every minute every breath. You just don’t know when a tragedy is going to happen like it did to Dr. Minnis,” said Tanoos.

Minnis was also a retired dentist and former farm equipment store operator.
