HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The Hartford woman accused of leaving her 4-year-old daughter alone on Tuesday told police she left to be paid for sex so she could pay her rent.
22-year-old Shi’day Nicks told investigators she left 4-year-old Shafyalya Nicks at home alone so she could meet a man who had promised to pay her $230 in exchange for sexual favors.
Nicks says she was originally due to be home around 2 p.m., but the man requested more time with her and she did not return home until 7 p.m.
Shafyalya was found by residents wandering Collins Street around 10 a.m. Tuesday. It took authorities nine hours to find her mother.
Nicks has been charged with risk of injury to a minor, reckless endangerment, and leaving a child under 12 unsupervised.
Shafyalya remains in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
