Study: Teens check social media more than 100 times a day

(WISH) -Teenagers are checking their social media feeds more than 100 times a day, according to new numbers out from CNN.

After the numbers came back a sociologist with the study says teenagers have a dependence on social media if not an outright addiction.

More than 200 eighth graders nationwide turned over their social feeds to child development experts who partnered with CNN.

The study is called #being13. It found that anxiety of not knowing what, if anything was being said about you online led to the compulsive checking.

  • 61 percent of teens said they wanted to see if their online posts are getting likes and comments.
  • 36 percent of teens said they wanted to see if their friends are doing things without them.
  • 21 percent of teens said they wanted to make sure no one was saying mean things about them.

Many of the students said in order to not miss a thing being said about them online they not only follow their friends, but also their enemies’ accounts.

#Being13 also found that teens no longer see a distinction between their lives in the real world versus the online world. But they’ll still post online what they admit they’d never say in person.

Some of the monitored messages and comments were extremely hurtful and laced with profanity.

The study’s co-authors, along with their teams, analyzed an estimated 150,000 social media posts over six months. The teens also answered survey questions on the topic.
